09/17/17 - Puget Sound Radio reports Q103 CKQQ-FM 103.1 Kelowna Program Director Susan Knight returning to Victoria as the new PD and p.m. drive host at Ocean CIOC-FM 98.5.  Her start date is October 2.  She has been morning show host at Q103 since June 2014 and PD since May of this year.  PSR news

09/13/17 - Former CKNW AM 980 Vancouver news reporter Jack Bennest is resigning from his position as Councillor for the Town of Oliver, saying the fun seems to have gone out of local politics.  Prior to CKNW, where he worked from 1974-83, he was on air at CKOK Penticton, CHWK Chilliwack and CJOR Vancouver.  Bennest has been the longest-serving municipal politician in the South Okanagan, having served the Town of Oliver for 17 years in total, from 1988-93 and again from 2005 to now.  James Miller, Penticton Herald

09/07/17 - Global BC News Director Jill Krop has responded to criticisms by Osoyoos Councillor CJ Rhodes about the station's coverage of fires in the Okanagan.  Rhodes said that there is an apparent lack of understanding about Okanagan geography in Global’s Vancouver newsroom.  He was specifically pointing to news items that mentioned smoke in the entire Okanagan, when it was clear in the southern portions where Osoyoos is located, possibly impacting tourism in that region.  Osoyoos Today
Cal George CKWX early 1960s
09/06/17 (Updated) - Former Vancouver and Okanagan broadcaster Cal George died in Penticton in late July at age 96.  He started his career at CHWK Chilliwack in 1942, moving to CKWX Vancouver the same year, first as an operator and then announcer.  He stayed until 1967, much of the time hosting middays.  George moved to CKOK Penticton that year, where he was on-air until retirement in 1985.  At the time, he was one of British Columbia's best known and respected radio voices.  Red Robinson news

08/31/17 - Jody Tedford has been named PD at Country 103.1 CJKC-FM Kamloops.  He has been the acting PD and morning host since March and has held a number of positions with the Kamloops cluster since 2014.  Newcap Kamloops release 
Bill Phillips
08/30/17 - A celebration of life will be held in the Spring of 2018 for former Vancouver broadcaster Bill Phillips, who died August 24 at the South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver.  The former CBC and CHQM Vancouver radio host had been living in Okanagan Falls and passed away at age 83.  He began his career at CJIB Vernon in the 1950s, retiring to the South Okanagan in the mid 1990s.  Graham Funeral Home obituary

08/18/17 - Country 103 CJKC-FM 103.1 Kamloops has rebranded as New Country 103-1.  All of the personalities on Country 103 remain, but listeners will get, "More high-profile promotions, giveaways, and excitement.  An energy level to the music that is fresh.  And all-round attitude that says fun and today."  Press release

08/11/17 - From Broadcast Dialogue: Karl Johnston will be the new GM of the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Kelowna/Vernon division effective September 15, in addition to remaining GM of Pattison’s Saskatchewan stations.  He’ll take over management of the Okanagan cluster from Stu Crouse who retires at the end of September.

08/09/17 - CBC British Columbia has named Sarah Penton as the new host for Kelowna based Radio West.  She will now be in charge of the afternoon show, which airs on CBC Radio One CBTK-FM 88.9 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.  Penton joins the Radio West team from CBC Winnipeg, where she spent the past 15 years.  She has an extensive background in news and is a popular radio news presenter, reporter and producer.  Josh Duncan, KelownaNow

07/12/17 - The Ashcroft Reserve wildfire has destroyed the CIFM-FM-6 95.3 Cache Creek transmitter, which also serves Ashcroft from Elephant Hill, approximately midway between the two communities.  It rebroadcasts the programs of CIFM-FM 98.3 Kamloops.  Engineers will begin efforts to rebuild the site.  CFJC Today

06/29/17 - Former Power 104 CKLZ-FM 104.7 Kelowna staffer Sean Westphal passed away suddenly in Edmonton on June 24 at age 42.  He was most recently working as Creative Director at Harvard Broadcasting's Edmonton cluster.  Source: Broadcast Dialogue

06/29/17 - Former Juice FM CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna and Star 98.3 CKSR-FM Chilliwack personality Megan Milne has joined the morning show at Country 89 CKYY-FM 89.1 Welland, ON.  She joins current a.m. drive host Rob Leclerc after four years on air in B.C.

06/29/17 - Avenue Radio Ltd. has applied to the CRTC for authority to acquire the assets of CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna from Vista Radio Ltd. for $650,000.  Avenue Radio is wholly owned by Early Frost Investments Ltd., which is controlled by J. Nicholas Frost, the founder of Castanet.  He was also the founder and President of CILK-FM Kelowna from 1985-2006.  Castanet’s GM Chris Kearney, said the FM station will broadcast from the heart of the newsroom in its new Lawrence Avenue studios.  Castanet news  CRTC release

06/26/17 - The CRTC has approved an application by CBC to amend the broadcasting licence for CBYK-FM 94.1 Kamloops to operate an FM transmitter in Clinton to rebroadcast the programming of its national, English-language network service Radio One. The new low-power FM transmitter will replace the low-power AM transmitter CBUU AM 1070.  The new transmitter will operate at 98.9 MHz with an effective radiated power of 50 watts and an effective height of the antenna above average terrain of ‑69.2 metres.  CRTC release

06/13/17 - Former EZ Rock CKOR AM 800 Penticton afternoon host Jeremy McGoran took his own life Friday.  The 35-year-old made headlines across B.C. last year when he revealed publicly he was struggling with anxiety and depression and had contemplated suicide.  A funeral has not yet been set.  Joe Fries, Penticton Herald

06/07/17 - The CRTC has approved the recent sale of the NL Broadcasting three-station radio cluster in Kamloops.  Radio NL traces its roots to its founding by John Skelly in 1970 and has been independently operated for several decades.  Newcap has 95 radio stations across Canada, including three in Vancouver and one each in Kelowna and Penticton.  Kamloops This Week

05/29/17 - RTDNA Canada has announced the winners of the 2017 RTDNA Canada National Awards, presented Saturday evening at the 2017 National Conference and Awards Gala in Toronto.  The Byron MacGregor Award for Best Newscast (Small Market) was awarded to CKBZ Kamloops for B-100 Noon News and the Sports Feature Reporting Award (Small/Medium Market) was awarded to CBC Kamloops for Daybreak: Women’s World Hockey Comes to Kamloops.  The awards recognize the best journalists, programs, stations and news gathering organizations in radio, television, and digital.  Complete awards list

05/19/17 - Stephen Simpson, CRTC Regional Commissioner for British Columbia and the Yukon, addressed the 70th annual conference of the British Columbia Association of Broadcasters, held this week in Osoyoos.  He discussed the ever-accelerating pace of technological change and what it means for BC’s broadcasters and the need to adapt to change.  Simpson's background includes stints in broadcasting, advertising, media production and interactive media.  He has been a CRTC Commissioner since 2008.  CRTC release

05/16/17 - Bill Reid, one of Canada's most celebrated and accomplished contemporary artists and former broadcaster, is today's noteworthy British Columbian, as the province counts down to Canada's 150th birthday on Canada Day, July 1st.  His The Raven And The First Men sculpture is on display at UBC’s Museum of Anthropology.  Reid worked at CKOV Kelowna in 1939 and at stations in Victoria and Vancouver during the 1930s and '40s, and at a total of 17 radio stations in Canada before joining CBC in the late 1940s.  Kevin Griffin, Vancouver Sun

05/11/17 - Newcap Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of NL Broadcasting Limited, which owns and operates CHNL AM 610, CJKC-FM 103.1 and CKRV-FM 97.5 Kamloops.  The deal is subject to CRTC approval.  Newcap release

04/25/17 - Jasmin Doobay and Susan Knight will move into Program Director roles with their respective Kelowna stations effective May 1.  Current Power 104 CKLZ-FM 104.7 and Q103.1 CKQQ-FM PD Bob Mills will move into a Senior Program Advisor’s role with the stations, while maintaining his position on the Power 104 morning show.  Doobay's morning position will be taken over by current producer/announcer Bob Johnstone.  Knight has been handling mornings at Q103.1 for the last three years and became APD in 2016.

04/20/17 - Tony Wade, former executive producer of the CBC-TV Vancouver current affairs series Pacific Report has died March 31st at St. Leonards-on-Sea, England after suffering from throat cancer.  He was 68.  During his his television career begining at CHBC-TV Kelowna in 1967, he was a Producer/Director/Writer and Executive Producer, working for a number of major networks including CBC, CTV, VTV, Global TV, ABC and PBS.  Charlie Smith, Georgia Straight  CBC information 
Tom Mark
03/25/17 - Tom Mark has been hired for full time morning news at Kiss CKIZ-FM 107.5 Vernon, his home for the past two years.
He's been working at the station in a fill-in capacity.  It's a homecoming of sorts for him, as he spent many years as News Director at Jim Pattison's CJOR Vancouver during the 1980s and '90s.  Mark takes over for the retiring Ron Manz.

03/15/17 - Former Okanagan broadcaster T.J. Connors is now hosting afternoons at HTZ-FM CHTZ-FM 97.7 St. Catharines, ON.  He was most recently the morning program host at Country 103 CKJZ-FM 103.1 Kamloops and was morning show host at The Juice! CJUI-FM 103.9 Kelowna from July 2012 to January 2013.  FYI Music News
Jack Pollard
02/23/17 - Jack Pollard, former broadcaster and co-owner of CFJC-TV, and radio stations CFJC and CFFM Kamloops passed away February 18 at age 88.  He began his broadcasting career at CKCK Regina followed by a move to CJIB Vernon, arriving in Kamloops in 1961, where he began as operations manager of CFCR-TV (later CFJC-TV) and the two radio stations.  Pollard later became a co-owner and managing partner and retired in 1987 after the TV and radio operations were sold to Jim Pattison.  Doug Collins, CFJC-TV

02/13/17 - Former Vancouver Island and Okanagan broadcaster Troy Scott, PD at Virgin Radio CKMM-FM 103.1 Winnipeg, has added PD duties at iHeartRadio sister station BOB FM CFWM-FM 99.9.  He previously held APD positions with the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group in Kelowna, was PD for Vista Radio stations on Vancouver Island/Sunshine Coast and CIGV-FM 100.7 Penticton as well as Harvard Broadcasting stations in Edmonton.

02/07/17 - Former Sunfm CHSU-FM 99.9 Kelowna a.m. drive hosts Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu will be the hosts of a new morning show on KiSS CKKS-FM 104.9 Vancouver (also Chilliwack/Abbotsford) beginning February 14th.  Kevin and Sonia were released from a.m. drive at The PEAK CKPK-FM 102.7 Vancouver last August.  KiSS release/audio  Alex Soloducha. 02/01/17 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Gerry O'Day is now the swing announcer for Classic Rock K96.3 CKKO-FM Kelowna.
That entails midday weekends plus relief for mornings and afternoons which he has done for four years on Newcap's two Kelowna stations.  He began two weeks of mornings on Monday.  He was also most recently the weekender at New Country 100.7 CIGV-FM Penticton.  K96.3 info

02/01/17 - West Kelowna resident Allan Holender fills a void in the Okanagan when he found there weren't any specific radio stations for the baby boomer generation geared toward those over 50.  He now hosts his own live show called A Boomer Home Companion which plays every Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m.  The show is featured on Boomer Public Radio which also runs programs from a number of cities in Canada and the U.S.  Early on, Holender hosted a jazz radio show before graduating with a sociology degree from the University of Montana.  Carli Berry, Kelowna Capital News

01/10/17 - CKNW AM 980 Vancouver reporter Shelby Thom has moved to Global Okanagan as the TV station's South Okanagan reporter.  The award winning reporter had been with CKNW since 2014.  Thom replaces Neeta Garsha, who is filling in for Global's Vancouver Island video journalist Kylie Stanton, who is on maternity leave.

12/13/16 - The CRTC has approved an application by CBC to increase the effective radiated power of CBYX-FM 92.7 Enderby from 135 to 201 watts and increase the effective height of the antenna above average terrain from -197.0 to -167.1 metres.  CBYX-FM rebroadcasts the signal of CBTK-FM 88.9 Kelowna.  The licensee stated that the requested technical changes will improve the quality of the Radio One signal for the residents of Enderby.  CRTC release

11/30/16 - Former KOOL-FM CHBE-FM 107.3 Victoria morning host Robin Farrell, who was released in August after an 11-year run has found a new home.  She has Tweeted that she joins the morning team with Darren Worts at Q103.1 CKQQ-FM Kelowna beginning January 9th.  Prior to Victoria, she worked in the Vancouver radio market.  Susan Knight moves to middays and transitions to PD in the spring.  Danny Kid will anchor p.m. drive and handle APD duties and “Your Girl” Brooklyn will move into evenings and weekends.

11/24/16 - Effective early December, former Sun FM CHSU-FM 99.9 Kelowna morning co-host Christy Farrell moves from Wild CKWD-FM 95.3 mornings to KooL CKCE-FM 101.5 Calgary along with co-host Fraser Tuff.  It's part of a Jim Pattison Broadcast Group shuffling at its Calgary stations.  Farrell left the Okanagan in March this year.

11/15/16 - Legendary broadcaster Red Robinson will be visiting Kelowna and West Kelowna Wednesday (11/16) as part of the Better Hearing Expo to speak about his recent battle with hearing loss.  He will speak at the Coast Capri Hotel at 10 a.m. and at the Heritage Retirement Resort in West Kelowna at 2 p.m. Wednesday about the positive effect hearing treatment has had on him and the specific hearing aid that has helped reduce background noise.  Dylan McCullough, Kelowna Now

10/20/16 - Susan Knight, morning show co-host of the Big Breakfast at Q103.1 CKKQ-FM Kelowna, has been appointed APD.  She's been with the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group station since June 2014.

09/12/16 - K96.3 CKKO-FM Kelowna made some changes to its imaging today with a new website logo that drops the Kelowna name buts remains Classic Rock.  Meanwhile both Penticton and Kelowna are in the Fall ratings using the online diary system for the first time.  Additionally, Peach City Radio CFUZ-FM 92.9 Penticton has yet to go on air, but has a studio built in an old Cannery building along with an office and a full time employee.  The CRTC authorized the new station in May 2015.

08/12/16 - Former Kelowna, Vancouver and Victoria personality Tarzan Dan Freeman, who has also entertained in Calgary and Toronto, has found a new home as p.m. drive host at Greatest Hits station Q107 CFGQ-FM 107.3 Calgary.  He begins his new gig on Monday.  Twitter announcement

07/13/16 - Roo Phelps, Country 100.7 CIGV-FM Penticton music director and morning show host has been nominated for a Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Award.  She is among the list of talent nominated in 42 award categories for the 2016 awards.  Phelps has been nominated for Music Director of the Year – Medium or Small Market, up against four other music directors from across Canada.  She co-hosts the morning show with Casey Clarke and has worked on-air and as a producer in since 1999, including several years in Vancouver.  Anita Sthankiya, Kelowna Now  CCMA Award Nominees

06/30/16 - AM 1150 (CKFR) Kelowna has announced a three-year renewal of its exclusive agreement with the Western Hockey League’s Kelowna Rockets.  It will provide exclusive, live coverage of all Rockets’ regular season and playoff games through to the 2018/19 season.  Games are voiced by AM 1150 veteran sportscaster Regan Bartel, who marks his 17th season as the “Voice of the Rockets”.  AM 1150 release

06/14/16 - Former newsman Glen Morrison lost his battle with cancer and died Sunday in hospice at age 67.  He began his career as an overnight DJ at CHNL Kamloops in 1972 and moved to CJIB radio Vernon in 1977, where he spent 34 years as the morning newsman and News Director.  He retired in March 2015.  Morrison was also reported to be one of the first disabled news reporters in British Columbia.  Kate Bouey, Castanet  KISS FM news  Vernon Morning Star obituary

04/21/16 - Vancouver market CKNW AM 980 anchor, reporter and fill-in talk show host Shane Woodford leaves the station at the end of May to become the new News Director at CHNL AM 610 Kamloops.  He was an anchor/reporter at CHNL for two years before joining CKNW in 2011.

04/16/16 - Geoff Hastings is now hosting the 11 p.m. weeknight newscast and Jordan Armstrong hosts the 5:30, 6:30 and 11 p.m. weekend newscasts at Global Okanagan CHBC-TV.  The new hosting began last Monday and originates from the Global Vancouver studios in Burnaby.

03/31/16 - James McIntosh has joined Newcap Radio Kelowna as Creative Director.  He was formerly a creative writer for Bell Media in Kelowna and continues as a writer/producer and was co-creator of DarkBlade Studios.  
George McLean
03/22/16 - George McLean, longtime CBC News journalist, died March 16th in a Toronto hospital.  He was 92.  He started his career in Kenora, ON in 1946, moving to Winnipeg in 1952, with a stop at CKOK Penticton as chief announcer in 1953.  In 1956, McLean joined CBC Vancouver as a staff announcer for CBC Television.  In 1965, he was transferred to Toronto and hosted national newscasts, including The National, a role he performed until 1986.  A funeral service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 in Richmond Hill, ON.  CBC News  Elgin Mills Visitation Centre obituary

03/21/16 - Bell Media has announced it has secured the weekly, one-hour series TED Radio Hour for its news/talk radio stations beginning in April.  The program will be aired locally Saturdays at 3 p.m. on AM 1150 CKFR Kelowna.  Bell Media release

03/04/16 - Sun FM CHSU-FM 99.9 Kelowna morning co-host Christy Farrell leaves the Okanagan to host mornings at Wild CHPK-FM 95.3 Calgary.  The move is effective at the end of April.  Formerly AAA The Peak, CHPK flipped to country music as Wild 95.3 on the morning of February 29.  Kelsey Davis, KelownaNow 
Kevin Lim & Sonia Sidhu
03/04/16 - Kevin Lim and Sonia Sidhu are returning to Kelowna’s airwaves beginning next Monday, March 7th.  They will continue as hosts of Peak Mornings at The Peak CKPK-FM 102.7 Vancouver but will be syndicated on Q103 CKQQ-FM 103.1 Kelowna from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Both stations are part of the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group.  The pair left Kelowna in April 2014, with their morning show on Sun FM CHSU-FM 99.9 at the top of the ratings.  Vincent Jones, KelownaNow
